Gaurav Gogoi Secures Victory in Jorhat, Overcoming BJP Opposition
In a surprising turn of events in Assam's political landscape, BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia openly praised Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi's victory in the Jorhat constituency, marking a significant moment that has stirred conversations within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Saikia's commendation of Gogoi's win, which he described as a result of ineffective political strategies by his own party, has led to speculation about his future within the BJP.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded to Saikia's remarks by suggesting that Saikia might be considering leaving the BJP. This speculation was fueled by Saikia's critical observation of the BJP's campaign tactics in Jorhat, including substantial financial investment, extensive publicity, and the presence of numerous party leaders, which ultimately did not secure a win against Gogoi.
Gaurav Gogoi clinched the Jorhat seat from the incumbent BJP, defeating Topon Kumar Gogoi by a significant margin of 1,44,393 votes. This victory was highlighted by Saikia on X (formerly Twitter), where he extended special congratulations to Gogoi, emphasizing the importance of the win in Jorhat.
Gogoi reciprocated the gesture by acknowledging Saikia's commitment to the people of Khumtai and his efforts during floods and in promoting agro-tourism. This exchange between politicians from rival parties underscores a rare moment of mutual respect amidst a fiercely competitive political environment.
The campaign for the BJP candidate Topon Kumar Gogoi saw extensive involvement from Chief Minister Sarma and other party leaders who spent considerable time in Jorhat. Despite their efforts, which included multiple meetings and roadshows across all 10 assembly constituencies under the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, their candidate was unable to secure a victory.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed his disappointment with Saikia's actions during a press briefing at the BJP state head office. He pointed out that Saikia failed to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and instead chose to congratulate the Congress' winning candidate. Sarma hinted at Saikia's potential departure from the party, stating that a true BJP supporter would have congratulated Modi on the result day.
Sarma also mentioned that while it is common for politicians to switch parties, he would still extend his best wishes to Saikia should he decide to join another party. This statement came amidst Sarma's acknowledgment of Saikia's recent criticism of fellow BJP MLA and minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, who nevertheless succeeded in securing more votes for the BJP candidate under his assembly segment.
This incident highlights the complexities and internal dynamics within political parties and raises questions about party loyalty and freedom of expression among politicians. As Assam's political scene continues to evolve, such instances of cross-party commendation and critique may shape future strategies and alliances.
