Russia, Western Powers Find Common Ground at G20 Summit Amidst Ukraine Crisis
The G20 Summit, held under India's presidency in New Delhi, became a platform for Russia and Western powers to assert their respective stances on the Ukraine crisis. The summit concluded with a declaration that was agreed upon by consensus but notably refrained from condemning Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. This development provided both parties an opportunity to claim vindication of their positions.
Macron Asserts Russia's Isolation

In the aftermath of the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron stated at a media briefing that the G20 leaders' declaration confirmed Russia's isolation due to its attack on Ukraine. He underscored the bloc’s commitment towards achieving just and lasting peace in war-ravaged Ukraine. His remarks were seen as an attempt to underline Western unity against Moscow's actions in Eastern Europe.
Lavrov Claims Victory for Developing Countries
Conversely, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov interpreted the lack of direct condemnation as evidence that attempts by Western nations to 'Ukrainize' G20 had failed. He attributed this largely to efforts made by developing countries within the group. Lavrov also praised India for fostering agreement on text relating to the Ukrainian conflict within the leaders' declaration.
G20 Leaders Adopt New Delhi Declaration
The G20 leaders adopted what is now known as 'The New Delhi Declaration' unanimously last Saturday without mentioning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine specifically. This move has been widely viewed as a climbdown by Western powers who have been vocal critics of Moscow’s actions in Ukraine.
Praise for India's Presidency
Lavrov lauded India's presidency of G20 which he claimed resulted in clear guidelines being established towards ensuring balance between various interests within global economy. Both Russia and Western powers commended India’s role in building consensus around such a contentious issue as the Ukraine conflict.
In conclusion, the G20 summit under India’s presidency was a significant event that allowed Russia and Western powers to assert their respective positions on the Ukraine crisis. The New Delhi Declaration, adopted by consensus without condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, has been interpreted differently by both parties. While Macron sees it as an affirmation of Russia's isolation, Lavrov views it as a victory for developing countries against attempts to 'Ukrainize' G20. Amidst these contrasting interpretations, India received praise from all sides for its role in facilitating agreement on such a contentious issue.
