G20 Summit: Putin, Xi Jinping Give It A Skip, MEA Jaishankar Reacts

India's biggest event G20 Summit is going to take place on September 9 and 10. However, Presidents of China and Russia have confirmed their unavailability at the. However, their absence seem to have less impact on Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar who said that the position of these countries could be reflected by the representatives present in the meeting.

In a brief conversation with ANI, Jaishankar asserted that the absence of the leaders of the nation at the G20 Summit is nothing new, as there were Presidents or Prime Ministers in the past who opted to step back from the Summit.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar

"I think, at different points of time in G20 there have been some Presidents or PMs who, for whatever reason, have chosen not to come themselves. But that country and its position is reflected by whoever is the representative on that occasion...I think everybody is coming with a great deal of seriousness," Jaishankar said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has personally called Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inform his unavailability to be a part of the summit due to the arrest warrant issued against him in connection with the Ukraine war. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping who met PM Modi at the BRICS Summit recently has also stepped back from the event.

However, the representatives of both the countries would grace the event. The Chinese delegation will be led by Premier Li Qiang, China's foreign ministry announced on Monday as it expressed Beijing's readiness to work with all parties to make the high-profile meeting a success. And Premier Li Qiang would represent Russia at the meet.
