Fresh Flare-Up In Manipur: Army Called In

According to sources the Meitei and Kuki communities came to blows in the New Checkon area in Imphal. The clashes are said to have began at a local market.

Curfew has been declared after reports of arson came from the area.

Manipur has been witnessing violent clashes related to multiple issues since the past one month.

Earlier this month, clashes had broken out in the state after tribals organised a solidarity march to protest against the demand by the Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe status. Over 70 people died in the violence that had simmered for over a week. During the violence, property worth over crores have been damaged and many were even forced to leave their homes. They sought safety in government-organised camps.

The violence was preceded by tensions over the eviction Kuki villagers from the reserve forest land, which led to several smaller agitations.

Meities comprise 64 per cent of Manipur's population and occupy 10 per cent of the state's territory. Non-tribals are not allowed to buy land in the notified hill areas. Their inclusion in the ST category will enable them to purchase land in the hills and this has upset the tribals.

The Kukis allege that the BJP government in Manipur led by chief minister, N Biren Singh has been targeting them systematically, with the aim of removing them from the forests and their homes in the hills. They also alleged that the war on drugs was also a ruse for their eviction.

The Army and paramilitary forces have been camping in the state and organising regular patrols while helping the civilians.

Recently Union Home Minister, Amit Shah assured of action against those involved in the violence. He had also met with the representatives of both the communities.
