Kovind Emphasises Need for Simultaneous Elections to Enhance Development and Economic Stability
Former President Ram Nath Kovind recently highlighted the significance of the "one nation, one election" concept as a vital element for national progress. He pointed out that frequent elections disrupt development and strain the economy. Speaking at a lecture by Divya Prem Seva Mission in the Maha Kumbh area, Kovind cited Election Commission data, noting that elections every three years cost India around Rs 5-7 lakh crore.

Kovind explained that holding elections frequently leads to teachers being assigned election duties, resulting in school closures for extended periods. This disrupts students' education. He suggested that simultaneous elections could solve this issue. Kovind chaired a panel recommending simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections first, followed by local body polls within 100 days.
Impact on Development and Economy
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, present at the event, added that frequent elections delay development projects due to the Model Code of Conduct. He stated that simultaneous elections would bolster the country's political and economic framework. Retired Supreme Court judge Justice Vineet Saran agreed, saying they would cut electoral costs and aid in building a developed India.
Kovind stressed that implementing simultaneous polls would save time and money while accelerating educational and developmental progress. Two bills outlining the mechanism for simultaneous elections were introduced in the Lok Sabha last month. They have been referred to a joint parliamentary committee for further consideration.
Support from Dignitaries
The event saw attendance from several dignitaries, including Divya Prem Seva Mission founder Dr Ashish Gautam, convener Sanjay Chaturvedi, Additional Advocate General Mahesh Chaturvedi, and other mission officials. Their presence underscored the importance of the discussion on electoral reforms.
Kovind's remarks underline the potential benefits of synchronised elections in enhancing governance efficiency. By reducing disruptions caused by frequent polls, resources can be better allocated towards development initiatives. This approach aims to create a more stable political environment conducive to growth.
