Four judges, CJI meet again: Attempt to break ‘master of roaster’ convention

The four judges made the suggestion to the CJI. However, the talks remained inconclusive. This was the second meeting of the four judges with the CJI this week.

The four judges suggested that a committee of senior judges be created who will decide on the allocation of cases which are sensitive and important in nature.

The judges would meet again to finalise on the proposal. This time around those judges who are in line to become the Chief Justice of India too would be included in the meeting.

As per the convention in the higher judiciary, the Chief Justice is the master of the roaster. It is he or she who allocates cases to judges in the higher judiciary. The four judges had questioned this convention in a fiery presser that was held on Friday last.
