Four Arrested by CBI for Kidnapping and Murder of Two Manipuri Youths; Government Promises Maximum Punishment
The CBI has arrested four individuals, including the wife of the primary suspect, related to the abduction and murder of two young people from Manipur. In response to these arrests, tribal organizations based in Churachandpur have called for strikes. The victims had been missing since July 6th before their bodies were discovered on September 25th which sparked violent student protests.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended four individuals in relation to the abduction and subsequent murder of two young Manipuri citizens, according to a statement by Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday, October 1st. The accused quartet was transported "outside the state" via a special flight, as per Singh's declaration. Among those arrested is the spouse of the primary suspect.
Minors Detained and Released

In addition to these arrests, two minor girls aged 11 and 9 were temporarily detained in connection with this case before being released. These children are reportedly daughters of the main accused. Representatives from the chief minister’s secretariat confirmed this information.
Tribal Organizations Protest Arrests
In reaction to these arrests, several tribal organizations based in Churachandpur have called for bandhs - general strikes or shutdowns - starting from Monday. These groups are protesting against what they perceive as an unjust detention and demanding their release.
Details about Victims
The victims at the core of this case are Phijam Hemanjit, a man aged 20 years old, and Hijam Linthoingambi, a girl just 17 years old. They had been reported missing since July 6th earlier this year. On September 25th photos emerged showing their bodies which sparked violent protests primarily driven by student groups.
CBI Intervention
"The CBI arrested four people from Henglep area of Churachandpur district for the murder of these two youths," said Chief Minister Singh confirming that CBI intervention had taken place due to severity and sensitivity involved in this case.
This incident has caused widespread shock and outrage across Manipur leading to heightened tensions among the local communities. The Chief Minister assured that the government will ensure maximum punishment for those found guilty in this case, signaling a zero-tolerance approach towards such heinous crimes.
In conclusion, while these arrests mark progress in bringing justice to the victims and their families, it is clear that they have also stirred up significant discord among certain tribal groups. It remains to be seen how authorities navigate this delicate situation moving forward. The violent reactions from students and other sections of society indicate just how deeply this incident has affected Manipur's people. As investigations continue under CBI supervision, all eyes will remain on how justice is served in this tragic case.
