Former judges not willing to become Lokayukta in Goa: Parrikar
Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, Parrikar said the state government approached a few retired Supreme Court judges for the post of Lokayukta, but they refused.
"Retired judges are reluctant to come to Goa. They are afraid that they will have to face allegations, fight court cases and face character assassination," he said. He was referring to the protests over appointment of Justice Sudershan Reddy as Lokayukta in 2011.
Reddy quit earlier this year citing personal reasons. The Chief Minister however assured that new Lokayukta would be appointed within two to three months, and government would amend Goa Lokayukta Act, 2011, if required, to make retired High Court judges also eligible for the post. The opposition demanded immediate appointment.
Leader of Opposition Pratapsingh Rane had said earlier that the vacancy must be filled up on a priority basis.
