He has been indicted on stopping former CBI special director, Rakesh Asthana from mentioning Rakesh Saxena, the then IRCTC director as an accused. He has also been accused of trying to weaken the case against RJD leader, Lalu Prasad Yadav. The DoPT has also been probing Verma's role in removing the name of Ahluwalia Contracts as he was close to the Ahluwalia family.

He has further been accused of favouring the induction of two officers R P Upadhyay and Rajeev Krishna, against whom internal inquiries had reportedly revealed adverse conducts.

It may be recalled that following a public spat, a high powered committee headed by the Prime Minister had ousted Verma as the CBI chief. He was made the director general of fire services, civil defence and home guards. He, however, defied the order and refused to take charge.
