Army Called to Battle Forest Fire Near Nainital's High Court Colony
Uttarakhand is grappling with a severe forest fire crisis, as flames have escalated to critical areas, including the High Court Colony in Nainital. The situation intensified on Friday, with the state reporting 31 new incidents of forest fires in the last 24 hours, affecting 33.34 hectares of forest land. The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has issued an alert and called for coordinated efforts among all departments to combat the fires.

In a concerning development, the fire near the Nainital district headquarters has taken a horrific turn, threatening the safety of residents in the High Court Colony and disrupting traffic movement. Efforts to control the blaze are underway, with forest department employees and army personnel working together. There is also consideration for deploying helicopters to aid in extinguishing the fire.
Anil Joshi, an assistant registrar of the High Court and resident of the area, reported that the fire has consumed an old and vacant house near The Pines but has not yet damaged the High Court Colony. However, it poses a significant risk as it has approached dangerously close to the buildings. Authorities are making concerted efforts to control the situation as swiftly as possible due to its proximity to sensitive Indian Army areas.
The district administration has taken preventive measures by banning boating in Naini Lake to mitigate risks. Nainital Divisional Forest Officer Chandrashekhar Joshi revealed that 40 Manora Range personnel and two forest rangers have been deployed to tackle the fire.
Statistics from the Forest Department's daily bulletin highlight the severity of the situation, with 26 incidents reported in Kumaon and five in Garhwal within a 24-hour period. Since November 1 last year, Uttarakhand has witnessed 575 forest fire incidents, affecting 689.89 hectares of land and resulting in financial losses exceeding Rs 14 lakh.
In related news, three individuals were arrested in Rudraprayag for allegedly attempting to start forest fires in Jakholi and Rudraprayag areas. Among them was a sheep herder from Tadiyaal village, Naresh Bhatt, who confessed to starting a fire to promote new grass growth for grazing his sheep. These arrests were made by a special team formed to prevent forest fires, as stated by Rudraprayag's Divisional Forest Officer Abhimanyu in a press release.
The ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for effective fire management strategies and community awareness to prevent such disasters in future. The collaborative efforts of local authorities, forest departments, and military personnel highlight the seriousness with which this issue is being addressed.
