Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to Visit Bangladesh on December 9 Amid Rising Tensions

India has announced that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will visit Bangladesh on Monday. This visit comes amid rising tensions between the two nations due to attacks on minorities, including Hindus, in Bangladesh. It marks the first high-level visit from India to Bangladesh since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India following significant anti-government protests.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated that Misri's visit is part of the structured interactions under the Foreign Office Consultations framework. During his stay in Dhaka, Misri will engage in discussions with his Bangladeshi counterpart and participate in several other meetings. The Foreign Office Consultations are scheduled for December 9.

Strained Relations and Recent Developments

Relations between India and Bangladesh have been strained since Muhammad Yunus's interim government took power in Bangladesh. The situation worsened recently due to attacks on Hindus and the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. These incidents have sparked protests in India, further escalating tensions between the two countries.

The MEA spokesperson addressed concerns about Das's arrest, emphasising India's expectation for a fair and transparent legal process. "We have spoken on this issue earlier. We would like to reiterate our expectation that relevant legal processes underway in Bangladesh are executed in a fair, just and transparent manner, ensuring full respect for the legal rights of concerned individuals," Jaiswal stated.

Protests and Diplomatic Reactions

In response to these events, the Bangladesh foreign ministry recently summoned the Indian envoy to protest against a group of protesters storming the Bangladeshi mission in Agartala. India has expressed serious concern over the rise in extremist rhetoric and violence against Hindus, urging the interim government in Bangladesh to protect all minorities.

India also expressed hope that Das's case, involving charges of sedition, would be handled fairly. Das was arrested last month at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport concerning a sedition case. The Indian government has stressed the importance of upholding legal rights during this process.

The upcoming visit by Foreign Secretary Misri aims to address these issues and strengthen diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh. Both nations are expected to discuss ways to improve relations and ensure minority protection during this critical period.
