FORDA Temporarily Halts Strike on Supreme Court's Appeal in Kolkata Case

The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has decided to temporarily halt its strike following an appeal from the Supreme Court. The strike was in response to the rape and murder of a trainee medic in Kolkata. FORDA announced that they will reassess their stance in two weeks.

FORDA Halts Strike After Court Appeal

Earlier, the Supreme Court urged protesting doctors nationwide to return to work. The court emphasised that both justice and medical services must continue. It assured the doctors that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure their safety and directed that no coercive action be taken against them.

Temporary Suspension of Strike

In light of these developments, FORDA has asked its members to resume their duties starting Friday. The association clarified that this is a suspension, not an end, to the strike. They will closely monitor the situation at R G Kar Medical College and review their position in two weeks.

The incident at R G Kar Medical College has deeply affected the medical community. It led to widespread outrage, claims of injustice, political involvement, and public scrutiny on social media. FORDA highlighted these points in their statement.

Supreme Court's Involvement

FORDA expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for recognising the seriousness of the situation. "We are also grateful to our legal team for ensuring that we have a voice within this task force," said a FORDA representative.

The Supreme Court's acceptance of their concerns and the formation of a National Task Force were welcomed by FORDA. This task force will address critical issues affecting resident doctors, such as work hours, safety, and living conditions.

FORDA also called on authorities to consider resident doctors on duty during the strike period and refrain from punitive actions against them.
