Following Pahalgam Attack, Over 1 Lakh Security Personnel Deployed For Amarnath Yatra 2026 Amid Terror Threat

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has put in place its most extensive security plan ever for the Amarnath Yatra, with over one lakh security personnel, advanced surveillance systems and elite special forces deployed to ensure the annual pilgrimage is conducted safely.

The enhanced security arrangements come amid concerns over possible terror threats and follow last year's attack in the Pahalgam region. Authorities say the focus this year is on preventing any security breach and ensuring a smooth experience for thousands of devotees expected to undertake the pilgrimage.

Special Frontier Force Deployed for the First Time

One of the biggest highlights of this year's security plan is the deployment of the Vikas Battalion of the Special Frontier Force (SFF).

This is the first time the elite unit has been included in the Amarnath Yatra security grid. The force has been stationed at strategic high-altitude locations, mountain ridges and sensitive points overlooking the pilgrimage routes.

Their primary task will be to monitor remote areas, detect suspicious movement and neutralise threats before they reach the pilgrimage corridor.

Security officials said the decision was taken after intelligence inputs indicated possible terrorist activity in parts of the Pir Panjal range.

Why Is the Special Frontier Force Important?

The Special Frontier Force was established after the 1962 India-China war and is known for its expertise in high-altitude warfare and special operations.

Unlike regular security forces, SFF personnel are trained to operate in difficult mountain conditions, including areas located more than 17,000 feet above sea level.
Their deployment reflects the government's determination to strengthen security using specialised capabilities in challenging terrain.

Over One Lakh Security Personnel on Duty

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the deployment of more than 100,000 security personnel for this year's pilgrimage.

The security force includes personnel from:

• Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
• Border Security Force (BSF)
• Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
• Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
• Jammu and Kashmir Police

Officials said more than 670 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been deployed, making it the largest security deployment in the history of the Amarnath Yatra.
These personnel will secure highways, transit camps, base camps and the entire pilgrimage route.

Technology Takes Centre Stage

Along with manpower, authorities have significantly increased the use of technology to monitor the Yatra.

More than 400 CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition systems have been installed across sensitive locations. These cameras are linked to a real-time surveillance network that allows security agencies to monitor activities continuously.

Drones will also be used for aerial surveillance, especially in difficult terrain where ground monitoring can be challenging.

In addition, 28 watchtowers have been set up along vulnerable stretches, double the number installed during last year's pilgrimage.

RFID Cards and Pehchan App Introduced

Authorities have introduced several digital tools to improve security and crowd management.

All pilgrims will be required to carry Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) cards. These cards will help officials track pilgrim movement along the routes and provide faster assistance during emergencies.

The administration has also launched the QR-code-based "Pehchan App" for service providers associated with the pilgrimage.

The app allows authorities to instantly verify identities, even in areas where internet connectivity is weak or unavailable.

Local Businesses Hope for a Peaceful Yatra

While the heavy security deployment has transformed parts of the valley into a highly guarded zone, local residents and business owners believe the arrangements will help restore confidence among pilgrims.

Abdul Rashid, a shopkeeper in Chandanwari, said the extensive security measures provide reassurance despite the visible security presence.

He noted that a peaceful and successful Yatra would not only benefit pilgrims but also support tourism and local businesses that depend heavily on the annual pilgrimage season.

The Amarnath Yatra is one of India's most significant religious pilgrimages and attracts thousands of devotees every year. With record troop deployment, cutting-edge surveillance technology and the induction of elite special forces, authorities hope to ensure the pilgrimage remains safe and incident-free.
