Thousands in Manipur's Imphal Valley Affected by Devastating Floods

Heavy rains have led to severe flooding in Manipur's Imphal Valley, affecting thousands and causing significant disruptions, officials reported on Wednesday. The Imphal River, swollen by continuous rainfall, has overflowed into residential areas, forcing inhabitants to seek refuge in community halls. The situation has escalated with at least 86 localities in Imphal West district, including prominent areas like Khuman Lampak and Sagolband, experiencing inundation due to the Nambul River breaching its banks.

Manipur Floods Affect Thousands

In Imphal East district, the relentless downpour has resulted in the breaching of the Imphal River's banks near Keirang, Khabam, and Lairiyengbam Leikai, leading to water flooding into several areas and engulfing hundreds of homes. The floodwaters have risen to chest level in various parts of Heingang and Khurai assembly constituencies, severely impacting residents' lives and properties.

A response team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was dispatched to Imphal via a special Air Force flight around 10 pm to spearhead rescue operations. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has addressed the crisis, stating that the riverbank breaches have adversely affected many people and livestock. He assured that all relevant authorities, including state government officials, security forces, NDRF personnel, and local volunteers, are diligently working to aid those impacted by the floods.

Efforts are underway to relocate stranded individuals to safer locations using boats. Additionally, the collapse of the Irang Bailey bridge on NH 37 in Taobam village of Noney district has severed road links between Imphal and Silchar, further complicating rescue and relief efforts.

The Imphal East district's SP office has issued a statement urging the public to cooperate with rescue operations and avoid crowding affected areas. The statement highlights the challenges posed by the ongoing rains and emphasizes the collective efforts of police and other agencies in assisting stranded residents.

This calamity underscores the vulnerability of the region to natural disasters and the importance of timely and coordinated response efforts to mitigate the impact on affected communities.
