26 Bodies Recovered from Flash Flood in Teesta River, 142 Still Missing

The picturesque Himalayan state of Sikkim suffered a devastating blow following a flash flood in the Teesta river, triggered by a cloudburst in the early hours of Wednesday. The calamity has resulted in significant human and infrastructural losses, with 26 bodies recovered so far from the debris, including seven Armymen. A further 142 individuals are still missing amidst the slush and rubble brought about by the disaster.

Officials reported on Friday night that over 25,000 people have been affected by this natural catastrophe. More than 1,200 houses were damaged and 13 bridges washed away as torrents of water swept across regions of Sikkim. This has left most parts of the state cut off from rest of India.

In response to this crisis situation, rescue operations have been initiated promptly with around 2,413 people having been rescued from different areas till date. To accommodate those displaced by the floods, authorities have set up 22 relief camps across Sikkim which now serve as temporary homes for nearly 6,875 individuals.

Government Response

Sikkim's Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced an ex-gratia payment for families who lost their loved ones in this disaster. Each bereaved family will receive Rs 4 lakh as compensation while immediate relief aid amounting to Rs 2,000 each will be provided to all those taking shelter in relief camps.

The magnitude of infrastructural damage caused is yet unknown but it is estimated to run into thousands of crores rupees worth damages. "We cannot give exact details about the damage," said an official spokesperson adding that "It will be revealed once a committee is formed and completes its analysis."

Prioritizing Rescue Operations

Despite facing such colossal damages both in terms human lives and infrastructure, the state government is prioritizing rescue operations. The spokesperson further added, "Our first priority is to save those who are stranded and provide them with necessary support."

In conclusion, Sikkim's flash flood has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis with many still missing and thousands displaced. While the immediate focus remains on rescue operations and providing relief to those affected, a comprehensive assessment of damages will be undertaken subsequently. This tragic event underscores the vulnerability of hilly states like Sikkim to natural disasters such as cloudbursts and flash floods, highlighting the need for effective disaster management strategies.
