Five Killed In Fresh Violence In Manipur's Jiribam
Fresh violence erupted in Manipur's Jiribam district on Saturday morning, resulting in the deaths of five people, according to police reports. The incident has added to the escalating tension in the region, which has been marked by conflict despite a heavy security presence.
The violence began when militants entered the house of a person living alone in an isolated area, about 5 kilometres from the Jiribam district headquarters, and shot him dead while he was asleep, a police officer stated.

Following this initial killing, a heavy exchange of gunfire broke out between armed men from the warring communities in the hills, roughly 7 kilometres from the district headquarters. This clash resulted in the deaths of four armed men, including three militants from hill-based factions, the officer added. Several others were reportedly injured in the gunfight, and the casualty figures are expected to rise.
The situation in Manipur has remained tense, with this latest violence occurring despite the deployment of over 60,000 security personnel, including forces from the central armed police, state police, Assam Rifles, and the Army. The recent unrest included drone and rocket attacks earlier in the week, further aggravating the security crisis in the state.
In light of the current situation and to ensure the safety of students and teachers, the state government has ordered the closure of all schools, including private and central institutions, on Saturday. Further details on the situation are awaited as security forces continue to monitor the region closely.
