Five Drown In Telangana While Posing For Selfie At Reservoir
In a heart-wrenching occurrence this past Saturday, a leisurely outing turned fatal for five young individuals who drowned at the Kondapochamma Sagar Reservoir in Siddipet district, Telangana. The victims, known as Dhanush (20), Lohith (17), Dineswar (17), Jatin (17), and Sahil (17) hailed from Hyderabad and were part of a group of seven friends embarking on a trip to the reservoir. Amidst their swim, a calamity struck as five of them found themselves in deeper waters, struggling to stay afloat, ultimately leading to their drowning. Miraculously, two of their companions, Mrugank and MD Ibrahim, survived the ordeal.
Prior to the tragedy, the group had visited the Konda Pochamma temple and had taken an unconventional route to reach the reservoir, an area off-limits to visitors, thereby flouting local regulations. While two members of their party were occupied taking photos, the rest ventured into the water, marking the onset of the tragic event. Efforts to retrieve the bodies of the deceased are ongoing, as stated by local authorities.

The incident has drawn attention from government officials, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressing profound grief. He has ordered an escalation in search and rescue operations, including the deployment of expert divers to assist in the effort. In an official statement shared on X, the Chief Minister extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and emphasized the importance of adequate relief measures. His words underscored the gravity of the loss: "I pray to God to grant peace to the souls of the deceased."
BRS MLA T. Harish Rao also addressed the tragedy, offering his condolences and urging for the implementation of preventive measures to forestall future accidents of this nature. He advocated for a compensation of Rs. 15 lakh for the families of each victim, highlighting the community's resolve to support those affected and to recover from this devastating incident.
The calamity underscores the critical need for stringent safety protocols around public water bodies to prevent similar tragedies. The local community is now calling for increased vigilance and the establishment of preventive strategies to safeguard visitors, ensuring such heartbreak is not repeated.
