Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy Initiatives Launched in North East India to Boost Local Economy
Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh inaugurated and laid the foundation for 50 projects with a total budget of Rs 50 crore. This includes a central contribution of Rs 38.63 crore. These projects aim to improve fisheries infrastructure, productivity, and job opportunities in the region. Singh reviewed the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) in the North Eastern states.

In Assam, 12 projects were initiated, including an Integrated Aqua Park in Darrang District. This park is expected to produce 150 MT of fish annually, generating Rs 10-15 crore in revenue and creating up to 2,000 jobs. A large fish feed plant in Kamrup district will produce 20,000 MT feed annually. Hatchery projects across various districts aim to produce 50 million spawns per year, significantly boosting local aquaculture.
Fisheries Infrastructure Development
In Manipur, seven projects include ice plants and cold storage units in Thoubal and Imphal districts. These facilities will help preserve fish produce and reduce post-harvest losses. Hatcheries focusing on locally important fish species will contribute to conserving biodiversity and enhancing fish production in the state.
Nagaland's three projects involve constructing freshwater finfish hatcheries in Mokokchung and Kiphire districts. These hatcheries will collectively produce 21 million fry annually, supporting regional aquaculture and providing economic opportunities for tribal communities.
Promoting Sustainable Practices
Sikkim plans to implement 24 projects, including establishing Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to promote sustainable fish farming. The construction of fish kiosks in Gangtok and other towns, along with ornamental fish rearing units, is also planned. These initiatives are expected to enhance income generation and livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Meghalaya's sole project focuses on promoting recreational fisheries in the East Khasi Hills District. Strategically located in a popular tourist area, this initiative is expected to attract visitors, generate local employment, and enhance the region's tourism appeal.
Boosting Aquaculture Growth
Tripura's three projects include establishing ornamental fish rearing units and finfish hatcheries. These initiatives aim to popularise ornamental fish farming, harness indigenous fish resources, and generate local employment opportunities.
The Northeastern Region leads India's journey toward self-reliance in fisheries and aquaculture. This reflects the government's commitment to inclusive development. The government has approved cumulative investments of ₹2,114 crore for fisheries through flagship schemes like the Blue Revolution Scheme, Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), and PMMSY.
These initiatives have significantly improved infrastructure, productivity, and sustainable practices. Inland fish production in the region has increased from 4.03 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 to 6.41 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, achieving an annual growth rate of five per cent.
The Department of Fisheries (DoF) recognises the immense potential of fisheries as a catalyst for growth. It has prioritised the Northeastern Region as a critical focal point for development. Initiatives include establishing modern aquaculture parks, hatcheries, and fish processing units while promoting innovative technologies like Biofloc systems and RAS.
These efforts aim to enhance productivity, strengthen value chains, and boost market access for fish farmers.
