World Cup 2014: Goa MLAs' controversial Brazil junket squashed
"We have cancelled official tour of MLAs to Brazil, bowing before public sentiment: Goa sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar said.
Earlier in the day, Goa MLAs drew flak as they announced that they would go on a study tour to Brazil for the World Cup.
After the BJP government sanctioned Rs 90 lakh for the trip, which included the sports minister, Congress cried foul alleging that the state chief minister Manohar Parrikar was misusing public funds.
Goa government on Thursday had justified the tour saying that the state is home to regular sporting events. They further pointed out that no bureaucrats were being taken, only politicians who bring vision.
Apart from Goa sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar, two other ministers and three MLAs were scheduled to travel to Brazil to watch matches to be held at the end of this month.
