Over 17 people killed in China fire

Beijing, Feb 6: Over 17 people were killed in a fire at a multistory building in south China's Guangdong Province, officials said today.

The fire broke out yesterday in a warehouse on the fourth floor of a small merchandise wholesale market in Huidong County. It had been put under control by evening, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. More than 17 people were killed in the incident and a fire fighter was seriously injured, the report said.

More than 20 fire engines were pressed into service. Rescuers had been searching throughout the night for people trapped in the building. The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
