Farmers Vs. Haryana Police: Tear Gas, Eyewear, And The Battle For MSP
The ongoing farmers' protest saw a fresh round of confrontations at the Shambhu border in Haryana, as authorities clashed with a group of Punjab farmers seeking to march to Delhi. Their goal: is to demand a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and address various other grievances, as reported by Hindustan Times.
The Haryana police, in an effort to block the protesters' renewed push, have employed a series of measures, including tear gas and pepper spray, while the farmers have come equipped with protective gear.

Rising Tensions at the Shambhu Border
On Sunday, Haryana police escalated their efforts to prevent the farmers from advancing towards Delhi by reinforcing barricades and using tear gas to disperse the crowd. The tear gas, fired at regular intervals, created intense scenes as farmers, many of whom were part of a group that had been camping at the border since February, attempted to move forward, as reported by Hindustan Times.

In response, the farmers took protective measures—wearing protective eyewear, covering their faces, and even attempting to neutralize the gas by covering the canisters with wet jute bags.

Police and Farmers Lock Horns
The protest intensified as the farmers, led by Sarwan Singh Pandher, asserted their right to march to Delhi. Farmers were blocked by the police, who demanded to see a written permission list for the 101 individuals who had been allowed to march. The police claimed that the farmers advancing beyond the barricades were not part of the official list. "We need to identify the protesters first before allowing them to move forward," said a Haryana police official, raising doubts over the identities of those pushing ahead, as per media reports.
However, the farmers contended that the police might have received the wrong list. They emphasized their commitment to a peaceful protest, expressing frustration with the heightened use of force and tear gas. "We will cooperate with the ID checks if needed, but we want the Prime Minister to resolve our issues," said Pandher, underlining the group’s willingness to sacrifice for the cause.

A Showdown of Tactics
As the standoff continued, both sides employed unconventional tactics. The police, armed with tear gas and pepper spray, maintained a strict presence at the barricades. Meanwhile, farmers made sure to come prepared for the battle, with many using protective gear to minimize the effects of the tear gas.
The farmers’ demands, centred around a legal guarantee for MSP and other rights, have remained largely unmet, fueling further protests, as per media reports. The escalating tension at the Shambhu border is a reminder of the ongoing struggle between the government and farmers over issues that have continued to disrupt the political landscape for years.
The situation at the Shambhu border remains tense as the protest continues, with farmers determined to press on and authorities standing firm in their efforts to control the situation. The future of the march, and the government’s response, will likely shape the next phase of this ongoing protest.
