Farmers Pay Tributes to Freedom Fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev on Shaheed Diwas

On March 23, in Ambala, a significant gathering of farmers from Punjab and Haryana took place at the Shambhu border to honor the memory of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev on ‘Shaheed Diwas’. This day, observed annually, commemorates the sacrifice of these revolutionary freedom fighters who were executed in 1931 by British imperialists. Their act of valor remains a source of inspiration in the narrative of India's struggle for independence. The event saw the presence of renowned wrestler Bajrang Punia, who emphasized the importance of respecting martyrs to continue the fight for justice.

Punia highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by families and female wrestlers in Haryana, pointing out the government's failure to address their grievances. This was in reference to the protests against the former Wrestling Federation of India chief over allegations of sexual harassment. "The farmers of Haryana and Punjab will fight this battle with full strength. We are not demanding crores of rupees from the government. We are only demanding MSP on crops," Punia stated, underlining the farmers' demands for fair treatment and support.

The farmers' protest, led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha Non-Political and the Kisan Mukti Morcha, began on February 13 with a march towards Delhi, dubbed 'Delhi Chalo'. Their demands include a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), implementation of Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, no increase in electricity tariffs, withdrawal of police cases, justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation for families who lost members during the 2020-21 agitation.

The march faced resistance at Shambhu and Khanauri border points on the Haryana-Punjab border, leading to clashes with security forces. Despite these challenges, the farmers' resolve remains strong as they continue to demand their rights and seek justice for past grievances. The tribute at Shambhu border not only served as a remembrance for India's brave freedom fighters but also as a rallying point for those fighting current battles for fairness and dignity in agriculture.
