Farmers' Loan Waiver: Will It Boost Hemant Soren's Poll Prospects In Jharkhand?

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has announced a loan waiver of up to Rs 2 lakh for farmers, just ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The move is expected to benefit 176,977 farmers and waive loans amounting to Rs 400.66 crore. Soren made the announcement during a rally in Ranchi, where he distributed cheques to farmers who had borrowed up to Rs 2 lakh.

The loan waiver is an extension of the government's earlier initiative, the 'Maiyan Samman Yojana', which provides Rs 1,000 per month to women since August this year. The government has also waived outstanding electricity bills and now offers free electricity up to 200 units.

Soren accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of hindering development and urged them not to obstruct the programme. He explained that the initial plan was to waive loans up to Rs 50,000 in the first phase, but adverse weather conditions over the past few years prompted the government to increase the waiver to Rs 2 lakh, impacting around 3.8 million registered farmers in the state.

The BJP, however, has questioned the timing of the loan waiver, with former Jharkhand BJP chief Deepak Prakash suggesting that Soren's move was politically motivated just before the elections. Prakash claimed that Soren was acting in haste due to declining political support and noted that during the previous BJP government, farmers received Rs 2,000 per acre in addition to the PM Kisan scheme, which Soren's government discontinued.

As the state prepares for elections to its 81-member Assembly, a top Election Commission official has announced that 100% of voters from particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs) have been registered. The state has 25.9 million registered voters, with an Assembly term ending on January 5, 2025. The updated electoral roll was published on August 27, and political parties have received copies of the updated roll.

The electorate includes around 12.8 million women voters, with over 110,000 first-time voters aged 18-19, 114,000 voters aged 85 and above, 364,000 voters with disabilities, and 1,845 centenarian voters as of September 20.
