Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio Announces 50/50 Royalty Share for DAB Resource Exploration

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced that the exploration of natural resources in the Disputed Area Belt (DAB) will lead to an equal royalty division between two states. This statement comes amid Assam's plans to explore crude oil in the Dissoi valley, known as Tsurang in Nagaland, which is part of the DAB. Rio mentioned that the Indian Government, Home Ministry, and Assam are involved in discussions about starting crude oil operations.

Nagaland CM Announces Royalty Sharing for DAB

Rio explained that any resources extracted from the disputed area would see royalties split equally between Nagaland and Assam. If ownership remains unclear, funds will be held in escrow until resolved. He shared these insights after opening the Sammogooting Stadium in Chümoukedima district. The chief minister stressed that while Nagaland has control over its side of the disputed area, they aim to resolve issues due to Assam's influence over neutral forces.

Resource Wealth and Ownership

The Nagaland government has already addressed this issue at the cabinet level and is waiting for a court decision on territory ownership. Although a previous ruling favoured Nagaland, the final verdict is still awaited. Beyond territorial disputes, Rio highlighted the significant mineral wealth in these areas, including cobalt and nickel, essential for modern technology like electronics and vehicles.

Rio emphasised that these resources are worth billions, yet many Nagas remain unaware of their potential wealth. He stated, "We Nagas are rich, but we have decided to remain poor." He urged people to decide whether to continue this way or take action. The chief minister also spoke about the new stadium's significance during its inauguration.

Stadium Inauguration and Community Impact

The stadium was built at a cost of Rs 9.51 crore and can seat 1,000 people. Rio noted it represents a love for sports and a shared vision for progress. He described it as an important achievement for the state, highlighting Chümoukedima district's cosmopolitan nature and opportunities for locals and outsiders alike.

Rio mentioned plans to develop similar facilities across all districts to promote sports among citizens. He believes such infrastructure will inspire unity and strengthen community ties while contributing to the development of Nagas. The chief minister's remarks reflect a broader vision for both resource management and community growth in Nagaland.

The ongoing discussions about resource exploration in disputed areas underscore the complexities involved in balancing territorial claims with economic opportunities. As both states await further legal clarity, the focus remains on equitable resource sharing and fostering regional development through initiatives like sports infrastructure.
