Planning Your Next Holiday To Maldives? Lakshadweep Can Be A Better Alternative
Just two months after appealing the rich families to hold weddings in India instead of abroad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a subtle message to Indians to boost tourism in Lakshadweep instead of the Maldives.
A few tweets with pictures from his social media alone triggered over 50,000 searches on Google and the topic became the ninth most searched word on the said search engine on Wednesday. His pictures created a lot of noise on X (formerly Twitter) as netizens believed that it was a clear message to the new Maldives government which is leaning towards China.

Not surprisingly, a Maldives minister passed insulting remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi before deleting the post. Mariyam Shiuna, Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts, referred the PM a "clown" and a "puppet of Israel". "What a clown. The puppet of Israel Mr Narendra diver with a life jacket #VisitMaldives," Shiuna tweeted in a now-deleted post.
Also, Zahid Rameez, a Council member of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), made racist comments against Indians came in response. In a post, Rameez wrote, "The move is great. However, the idea of competing with us is delusional. How can they provide the service we offer? How can they be so clean? The permanent smell in the rooms will be the biggest downfall."
This has led to many netizens wondering whether Lakshadweep will be a better alternative destination.
Both tropical island destinations are known for gorgeous scenery. Positioned in the midst of vast oceans, these islands offer a plethora of water-based activities and breathtaking landscapes that set them apart. Beyond their visual appeal, they provide unparalleled experiences.
Famous globally for its picturesque landscapes, natural atolls, and luxurious resort choices, the Maldives is a destination that captivates with its diverse and vibrant marine life and hospitable locals. Among the must-visit places in the Maldives are Male, Maafushi, and Hithadhoo.
Despite both the destinations offering similar experience, Indians opted to go to the Maldives. As a result, India maintained its position as the leading market for the Maldives in 2021 and 2022.
As per a report, over 2.91 lakh and 2.41 lakh Indian tourist arrived, respectively in 2021 and 2022. As on June 13, 2023, India continued to be a sought-after source market for the Maldives, recording 1,00,915 visited the country.
If the Indians follow the PM's suggestion, it will be affect the Maldives badly as it is the largest industry in the island nation.
Lakshadweep emerges as an enticing choice for Indians, primarily owing to its cost-effectiveness. In the coming years, the allure of Maldives-inspired water villas and burgeoning cruise tourism will undoubtedly captivate visitors. Enthusiasts can indulge in an array of water sports, from the depths of Scuba diving and deep-sea fishing to the serenity of snorkeling, kayaking, and the thrill of windsurfing, promising an immersive and unforgettable experience.
With Taj Hotels group announcing its plans to open two properties on two islands - Suheli and Kadmat.
However, the bureaucratic hurdles and the absence of direct flights from Tier A cities for Lakshadweep visits will be a major roadblock for Lakshadweep in becoming a major tourism destination.
Entry to Lakshadweep is limited, and obtaining an entry permit from the Lakshadweep Administration is obligatory for those keen on exploring this island destination. The voyage to this idyllic paradise can be undertaken either by air or sea.
Streamlined entry permits, improved transportation connectivity, and effective tourism promotion campaigns have the potential to position Lakshadweep as the ideal destination for travelers.
