EXPLAINED | ISRO's SpaDeX Launch Delayed By 2 Minutes; What Caused The Space Traffic Jam?
India's space program experienced a minor yet intriguing delay as the Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO) postponed the launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C60) by two minutes.
Initially set to lift off at 9:58 PM, the launch was rescheduled to 10:00 PM. The reason? A "traffic jam" in space rare yet growing challenge in modern space exploration.

Why Was the SpaDeX Launch Postponed?
The delay occurred due to "conjunctions with other satellites" in the same orbital path. This situation was exacerbated by satellites from the Starlink constellation, owned by Elon Musk's SpaceX. Starlink currently operates about 7,000 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) to provide broadband internet connectivity globally. However, the sheer number of these satellites contributes significantly to orbital congestion. With plans to expand Starlink's constellation to 12,000 satellites, the problem is expected to grow.
Space congestion is not a new issue for ISRO. Similar circumstances led to minor delays during India's Chandrayaan-3 mission in 2023. The increasing presence of satellites and space debris in LEO highlights the pressing need for effective traffic management in space.
What is the SpaDeX Mission?
The SpaDeX mission, short for Space Docking Experiment, is a pivotal step in India's journey toward mastering advanced space technologies. The mission aims to demonstrate the ability to dock and undock satellites in orbit-a critical capability for future space operations like building space stations, enabling human spaceflight, and conducting complex multi-satellite missions.
The PSLV-C60 rocket, tasked with carrying out the SpaDeX mission, represents a blend of innovation and collaboration. For the first time, a private Indian company, Ananth Technologies, was involved in the assembly and testing of the rocket. The launch vehicle was integrated at a new facility at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, further underlining the mission's groundbreaking nature.
The Role of Docking Technology
Docking is a sophisticated process that involves a "chaser" satellite aligning and connecting with a "target" satellite in orbit. This technology is essential for constructing space stations, conducting lunar sample return missions like Chandrayaan-4, and supporting human spaceflight programs. By mastering docking, India is positioning itself among the select group of nations-Russia, the United States, and China-that have achieved this capability.
The Orbital Laboratory: A Bold Step Forward
One of the standout features of the SpaDeX mission is the innovative repurposing of the PSLV's fourth stage. Traditionally discarded as space debris, this stage has been transformed into an active orbital laboratory known as POEM (PS4-Orbital Experiment Module). The module will host 24 experiments, including testing green rocket fuel, conducting robotic operations, and even growing cowpea seeds in space. Additionally, POEM will carry out India's first live biology experiments in space, marking another significant milestone.
Why SpaDeX Matters for India
The successful execution of the SpaDeX mission will mark a monumental achievement for India's space program. Docking technology is a game-changer, enabling long-duration space missions, reusable spacecraft technology, and the development of India's proposed Bharatiya Antariksha Station. It also opens avenues for international collaborations and positions India as a leader in complex space operations.
Looking Ahead
The SpaDeX mission symbolizes India's growing prowess in space innovation and technology. Overcoming challenges like orbital congestion showcases ISRO's adaptability and commitment to excellence. With bold experiments and transformative technologies, SpaDeX sets the stage for India's ambitious future in space exploration, solidifying its status as a global spacefaring powerhouse.
