Expedite cases against MPs within a year: PM Modi

New Delhi, July 24: Prime Minister

on Thursday asked the ministries to review criminal cases against Members of Parliament within a year.

During general election campaign, Modi had promised to adopt stron graict action against graft.He had vowed to ask the Supreme Court to expedite the cases of leaders from all parties as part of his effort to deliver clean governance.

According to research by the Association for Democratic Reforms, this time there is a record number of lawmakers facing criminal charges - 186 members or 34 per cent of the Lok Sabha.

Many top politicians from different parties and states are facing corruption charges and also, some are accused in criminal cases.

YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy is being tried for corruption. Jayalalithaa, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is facing graft charges. Modi's confidante Amit Shah, who was recently made BJP president, faces murder charges for allegedly sanctioning the extra-judicial killing of Muslims in Gujarat by top police officers.
