Ex-Jharkhand CM Champai Soren To Launch New Political Party, Ditches JMM

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren has announced his decision to form a new political party, following rising tensions within the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the party to which he has dedicated most of his political career.

In a statement to the media, Soren revealed his plans, saying, "I had mentioned three options - retirement, organisation, or friend. I will not retire; I will strengthen the party, a new party, and if I meet a good friend on the way, then will move ahead with them." This announcement leaves the door open for potential future alliances, as reported by Hindustan Times.

When reminded of the limited time remaining before the state elections for launching a new party, it was stated by Soren, "That's not your problem." Further, he added that forming a new political party would not pose a problem, given that 30,000-40,000 workers could mobilize within a day. He asserted that the party would be established within a week.

Champai Soren's decision to create a new political outfit followed a period described by him as "bitter humiliation" during his tenure as Jharkhand chief minister. Just days before this announcement, dissatisfaction with the JMM leadership had been hinted at by Soren, particularly after government programs were abruptly cancelled by party leaders without his knowledge.

The former chief minister had taken office on February 2, following the resignation and subsequent arrest of then-CM Hemant Soren in a money-laundering case, as reported by Hindustan Times. However, the term of Soren was cut short when Hemant Soren was released from jail and re-elected as the JMM's legislature party leader on July 3, leading to Soren's resignation.

Champai Soren had arrived in Delhi on Sunday afternoon amid speculation about joining the BJP. No discussions regarding his potential switch to the BJP had yet taken place, as stated by Jharkhand BJP chief Babulal Marandi on Monday, as per media reports.

Marandi noted that no talks had been held with Champai Soren, emphasizing that he is a seasoned politician with a background in the separate Jharkhand movement and would decide his own path.
