Ex-DU Employee succumbs to injuries

New Delhi, Oct 7: Pavitra Bhardwaj, the 40-year old ex-employee of Delhi University, who set herself ablaze outside gate number 6 of the Delhi secretariat, succumbed to her burns.

A resident of northeast Delhi's Maujpur area, was first sexually harassed and then forced to quit from the post of a chemistry lab assistant in BR Ambedkar College. The Principal of the college is alleged to have harassed her on several occasions. Despite repeated complaints, her pleas were ignored.

Therefore, as a desperate measure to drive home her point, she doused herself with kerosene at 5:15 pm on September 30. She did not leave any suicide note, but the survived with 90 percent burns.

In her statement to the police, she said that she took this extreme step "to protest administrative inaction into her complaint". "No one was listening to my cries otherwise," she said in her statement.
