Environmental Clearances Granted for 29 Infrastructure Projects in Northeast India Over Two Years

The Environment Ministry has approved 29 large infrastructure projects in Northeast India over the past two years, with Assam receiving the majority of clearances. The process ensures ecological concerns are addressed through public consultations and expert appraisals.

The Environment Ministry has approved 29 major infrastructure projects in the Northeastern states over the last two years, as informed to Parliament. Minister of State for Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh stated that from April 1, 2023, to August 17, 2025, these environmental clearances (ECs) were granted for projects in the Northeast.

Assam received the highest number of approvals with 17 projects, followed by Tripura with six. Meghalaya was granted three clearances, while Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Sikkim each received one. Singh explained that the EC process involves several steps such as site-specific scoping and public consultations to address ecological concerns.

Environmental Concerns and Government Measures

The response was given to a query about whether the government had assessed the environmental impacts of large-scale projects in the Northeast's sensitive ecosystems. A report from Jamia Millia Islamia highlighted that climate change is reducing agricultural yields and threatening food security in the region.

Although Singh did not directly address this report, he mentioned that the government has implemented various schemes to tackle climate variability and its effects on agriculture in the Northeast. These initiatives aim to manage erratic rainfall, floods, and drought-like conditions affecting the region.

Government Initiatives for Climate Resilience

Among the measures are the National Action Plan on Climate Change and state-level plans. The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture and National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture are also part of these efforts. Additionally, the Mission Organic Value Chain Development focuses on the Northeastern region.

Singh noted ongoing collaborations with state governments, ICAR, and agricultural universities to enhance adaptive capacities. These efforts promote sustainable practices and aim to protect food security in the Northeast amid changing climate conditions.

The structured approach to granting ECs ensures that ecological concerns are adequately addressed through expert committee appraisals. This process is crucial for balancing development needs with environmental sustainability in these sensitive regions.
