Gyanesh Kumar Discusses Technology-Driven Initiatives to Enhance Voter Participation in Sweden

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar recently emphasised the Election Commission's technology-driven initiatives to boost voter engagement, including among overseas Indians. While attending an international conference in Stockholm, Kumar highlighted efforts to promote inclusive participation and civic involvement among non-resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs).

Kumar Highlights Voter Participation Initiatives

He pointed out the Online Voter Registration System and the Electronic Transmission of Postal Ballot Management System (ETPBMS) as key measures to facilitate greater participation from overseas voters. These systems aim to simplify the voting process for Indians living abroad, ensuring their voices are heard in elections.

International Conference on Election Integrity

Kumar was invited to deliver the inaugural keynote address at the conference focused on election integrity. The event, organised by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), in collaboration with the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Election Authority, and the Australian Electoral Commission, attracted over 100 participants from around 50 countries.

The conference discussions centred on critical issues such as disinformation, digital disruption, electoral security, climate-related risks, and Artificial Intelligence's role in elections. These topics are crucial for maintaining fair and transparent electoral processes worldwide.

India's Role in Global Electoral Discourse

India, as the world's largest democracy, has a longstanding partnership with International IDEA. The country actively contributes to global discussions through its institutional innovations and democratic experiences. This collaboration helps shape international electoral practices and policies.

The India International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Management (IIIDEM) is emerging as a leading institute for electoral management excellence. Through various capacity-building programmes and conferences, IIIDEM plays a significant role in enhancing electoral management skills globally.

The conference provided a platform for exchanging ideas and best practices among nations. It underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing challenges faced by electoral systems worldwide. Participants shared insights on improving election integrity through technology and innovation.
