Electoral Bonds Scheme Termed 'Major Scam' by Rahul Gandhi, Criticizes Enforcement Directorate
In a fervent critique of the BJP-led Central government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi labeled the electoral bonds scheme as a major financial scandal, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of influencing the Election Commission. This allegation came to light during a rally near Hyderabad, following the unveiling of the Congress party's manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi's comments underscored his party's stance against what he perceives as systemic corruption under the current administration.

Gandhi did not mince words as he referred to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as the "Extortion Directorate," suggesting a departure from its intended role towards coercive practices. He further accused the BJP of operating a metaphorical "washing machine" for corrupt funds, implicating the country's most corrupt leaders and ministers in these operations. According to Gandhi, these allegations are evidenced by transactions where companies, under duress from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), donate substantial sums to the BJP and are subsequently awarded lucrative infrastructure projects.
The Congress leader also claimed that his party's bank accounts had been frozen, a move he interprets as intimidation by the BJP. Despite this, he assured that his party remains undeterred and poised to challenge the BJP in the forthcoming elections. Gandhi's speech also touched on broader themes of constitutional integrity and democracy, asserting that the Congress would staunchly oppose any attempts to dismantle these foundational principles.
Addressing local political dynamics, Gandhi accused the BJP of emulating the alleged misconduct of Telangana's previous Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhar Rao, particularly concerning phone-tapping and misuse of government resources. He also highlighted the agrarian distress under Modi's tenure, claiming an alarming rate of farmer suicides and criticizing the government's financial priorities.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, along with cabinet colleagues and party leaders, supported Gandhi's assertions at the rally. Reddy criticized the Central government for failing to fulfill promises made to Telangana in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and echoed Gandhi's call for defeating the BJP in both state and national elections.
Revanth Reddy also responded to criticisms from K Chandrasekhar Rao regarding agricultural issues and unfulfilled promises by challenging Rao's leadership and promising retribution through legal means. This exchange underscores the heated political climate in Telangana and sets the stage for an intense electoral battle.
The allegations and counter-allegations between Congress and BJP leaders reflect deep-seated political rivalries that are likely to influence the upcoming electoral contests. With accusations of corruption, electoral malpractice, and constitutional violations at the forefront, voters are presented with starkly contrasting narratives from India's leading political parties.
