West Bengal Sees £147 Crore in Election Seizures Including Cash and Gold

In a significant operation following the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls dates earlier this month, authorities in West Bengal have confiscated a massive haul of illegal goods and unaccounted cash, totaling approximately Rs 147.19 crore. The seizures, as reported by an officer on Saturday, include gold, drugs, alcohol, and various other items, marking a substantial effort to curb illicit activities in the lead-up to the elections.

£147 Crore Seized Before Bengal Polls

The Election Commission's vigilant efforts have led to the seizure of over Rs 7.87 crore in cash till Saturday. In addition to monetary confiscations, a staggering 12.7 lakh litres of alcohol, valued at around Rs 33.86 crore, were also seized. The crackdown on narcotics resulted in the capture of approximately 3.5 kg of drugs, estimated to be worth Rs 18.28 crore. Among the most notable seizures was gold, with the yellow metal's worth pegged at Rs 27.32 crore during this period.

Overall, goods worth around Rs 36 crore were confiscated, bringing the total value of seizures to Rs 147.19 crore. This includes the unaccounted cash recovered during various operations. The Election Commission's actions reflect a determined stance against the malpractice of using money and alcohol to influence voters, a trend that has marred several election seasons.

Financially Sensitive Constituencies and Police Action

In response to these challenges, the Election Commission has identified six Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal as financially sensitive areas requiring special attention. This designation aims to ensure fair and free elections by mitigating the risk of financial inducements used to sway voters.

Adding to these efforts, the Kolkata Police made a significant discovery in the Jorabagan area in the northern part of Kolkata on Friday. During a routine naka checking, officers intercepted a vehicle carrying approximately 15 kg of gold bars valued at Rs 82 lakh. Five individuals associated with this consignment were arrested at the scene.

An initial investigation into this seizure suggests that the gold bars were smuggled from neighbouring Bangladesh through the border area of North 24 Parganas district. Authorities are now probing deeper to ascertain whether this consignment was intended for any agents linked to gold smuggling rackets operating within Kolkata.

This series of seizures underscores the comprehensive measures being undertaken by both the Election Commission and local law enforcement agencies to clamp down on illegal activities that could potentially influence the electoral process in West Bengal. With these actions, authorities aim to ensure that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections are conducted in a fair and transparent manner, free from undue financial influence.
