Elderly Couple Tragically Killed in Kanpur After SUV Reverses During Drunk Driving Incident
An elderly couple tragically lost their lives in a suspected drunk driving incident involving a sports utility vehicle (SUV) on Saturday. The SUV was reversing outside a temple when it ran over the couple, leading to the driver's arrest, according to police reports. Liquor bottles were discovered in the vehicle, raising suspicions of intoxication.

Lakhan Singh, the son of the deceased couple, reported that he had accompanied his parents to the Anandeshwar temple for morning prayers. As they arrived, an SUV with three occupants reversed and struck his parents. Deputy Commissioner of Police Central Dinesh Tripathi stated that the couple was resting on the street when the accident occurred. The driver fled immediately after realizing the incident.
Driver Arrested After CCTV Review
Police swiftly reviewed CCTV footage from the area and apprehended Rajesh Kumar Tiwari, aged 45, who is believed to have been driving the SUV. The victims were identified as Sita Ram, 70, and his wife Shanti Devi, 65, both residents of Kanpur's Sajeti area. A case has been filed against the three individuals in the vehicle under sections 105 and 352 of the BNS.
The charges include punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace. The Deputy Commissioner mentioned that Rajesh Kumar Tiwari would face court proceedings on Sunday.
