Eid Al-Adha 2025: Dhul-Hijjah Moon Sighted In India, Bakrid To Be Celebrated On June 7

The crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul-Hijjah 1446 AH was sighted on Wednesday, May 28, in Mumbai and several other parts of India, officially starting the Islamic month on Thursday, May 29. As a result, Eid al-Adha 2025, also known as Bakrid, will be celebrated across India on Saturday, June 7. Arafat Day, also called Youmul Hajj, will be observed a day earlier on Friday, June 6.

According to reports, the Central Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee and the President of the Majlis Ulema-e-Deccan confirmed the sighting of the moon and announced the corresponding dates for Arafat Day and Eid al-Adha.

The Markazi Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee at Masjid-e-Jama in Mumbai issued an official statement: "Peace be upon you! The Central Moon Sighting Committee (Markazi Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee), Masjid-e-Jama, Mumbai has announced today, Wednesday (Bhod), dated 29th Zilqadah 1446 Hijri, corresponding to 28th May 2025, that the moon has been sighted. Therefore, tomorrow will be the 1st of Zilhijjah 1446 Hijri, corresponding to 29th May 2025."

In Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations including the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman, the Dhul-Hijjah moon was sighted a day earlier on Tuesday, May 27. Consequently, these countries, along with communities in the UK, US, Canada, France, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria that follow the Gulf calendar, will observe Arafat Day on Thursday, June 5, and celebrate Eid al-Adha on Friday, June 6.

With the crescent now officially sighted in India, preparations for one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice, are set to begin across the country.
