ECI Prohibits Use of AI Videos in Election Campaigns Ahead of Bihar Polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a strict directive banning AI-generated videos in election campaigns, aiming to preserve fairness and transparency in the electoral process. Candidates are now prohibited from using artificial intelligence tools to create content targeting opponents, ensuring a level playing field for all political parties.

With the Bihar Assembly elections scheduled for November 6 and 11 and results expected on November 14, the move comes as a proactive measure to prevent the misuse of synthetic media during campaigns. The EC has emphasized that all parties must comply with the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) while using any AI or digitally altered content.

Guidelines for Fair Campaigning

Political parties are reminded to focus their campaigns on policies, programs, governance records, and public actions. Personal attacks unrelated to public duties, spreading false information, or manipulating facts are strictly prohibited.

The commission also highlighted the dangers of AI tools that distort information or spread misleading narratives on social media. By discouraging such practices, the EC seeks to safeguard voters from misinformation and maintain the credibility of the election process.

Transparency and Labelling

To ensure accountability, parties using AI-generated or synthetic content must label it clearly as "AI-generated," "digitally manipulated," or "synthetic content." This transparency allows voters to distinguish between authentic and manipulated media, helping them make informed choices.

The EC is actively monitoring social media platforms to enforce these guidelines. Any violations of the MCC will be addressed promptly, reflecting the commission's commitment to free, fair, and transparent elections.

By restricting AI misuse, the Election Commission reinforces democratic values, ensuring campaigns are based on real information rather than artificial manipulation.
