New Delhi, Nov 19: The Election commission is likely to announce the poll dates in five states by January. This would be done as soon as the revised electoral rolls are published between January 5 and 15. The polling is expected to begin in February and go on till March.

According to Nirvachan Sadan sources, the updated voters' list will be published by January, with the date of publication varying across states. Although the EC prefers to have them by January 5, the revised voters' list of state is often delayed pertaining to the the size of the state and the number of voters in the country.

Even in 2012, the UP polls stretched over seven phases between February 8 and March 3.

Also, banks in the pollbound states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur have been advised by the Election Commission not to apply indelible ink on any finger of the customers' left hand.
