Eating Heavy Meals at Night During Navratri Fasting Can Negatively Impact Metabolism and Digestion

Health experts advise against heavy meals at night during Navratri fasting, as it can lead to digestive issues and slow metabolism. Opt for lighter meals for better health.

The Navratri festival, celebrated from September 22 to October 2, involves many devotees fasting during the day and eating at night. Health experts caution that this practice might strain the digestive system. Typically, those fasting consume fruits during the day and heavier meals like sabudana-aloo khichdi or singhare ka halwa at night, which can lead to indigestion and acidity.

Health experts advise against heavy meals at night during Navratri fasting, as it can lead to digestive issues and slow metabolism. Opt for lighter meals for better health.

Divya Malik, a senior consultant in Dietetics and Nutrition at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Delhi, explained that fasting for nine days with heavy meals at night can slow metabolism. "Fasting for nine days, consisting of abstaining from food throughout the day and eating a heavy meal at night, puts pressure on the digestive system," she noted. This pattern makes it hard for the body to burn calories efficiently.

Impact on Health and Nutrition

Malik also highlighted the importance of balanced meals and hydration. "It's better to eat light and balanced meals and drink plenty of water to ensure proper digestion and prevent harm to the body," she advised. A lack of protein during fasting may increase body fat and cause long-term health issues.

Working women face additional challenges in maintaining energy levels while fasting. Anjali Tiwari, employed at a private bank, shared her experience: "It's difficult to maintain a healthy diet during a fast due to a busy lifestyle. Weakness sets in during the fast, but I fast for the entire nine days."

Personal Experiences During Navratri

Phoolwati, an e-rickshaw driver from Patparganj, Delhi, described her routine: "I fast for nine days and nine nights, and I also chant the name of Mata Rani a hundred times... For nine days, Mata gives me so much strength that even if I don't drink water, I can still drive the rickshaw." She performs puja in the evening before eating whatever is offered to Mata Rani.

Sunita Bhardwaj, a teacher in Mayur Vihar Phase 1, East Delhi, finds it challenging to prepare Navratri food due to her schedule. "I fast during Navratri every year. I have to go to school early in the morning and also have household responsibilities, so preparing Navratri food in the morning becomes difficult," she said. She opts for fruits during the day and sabudana khichdi after evening prayers.

Balancing Faith and Health

Doctors warn that an unbalanced diet during fasting can lead to deficiencies in essential nutrients like protein, iron, and calcium. This can result in weakness, dizziness, and bone pain. Khushboo Singh, a dietician at Noida District Hospital, suggests starting the day with warm water and curry leaves. "Start the day with warm water and curry leaves," she recommended. Light fruits and nuts are ideal for breakfast.

Singh further advised keeping meals moderate throughout the day. This approach helps maintain health while respecting religious practices during Navratri.
