Dual Kidney Transplant Performed at AIIMS-Delhi, Offering New Hope to Patients
AIIMS-Delhi achieves a remarkable feat by performing a dual kidney transplant, providing a life-saving opportunity for a patient in urgent need. Discover the details of this groundbreaking procedure.
In a groundbreaking medical achievement, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Delhi has successfully performed a dual kidney transplant on a patient who was undergoing dialysis. This remarkable procedure marks a significant milestone in the field of organ transplantation in India.

Collaboration and Organ Donation
The complex surgery was meticulously carried out by a collaborative team from the AIIMS Department of Surgical Disciplines and the Department of Nephrology, in partnership with the Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO). The donor, a 78-year-old woman, was admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre on December 19, 2022, with a severe head injury sustained from a fall. Tragically, she was later declared brain dead.
In a testament to the power of organ donation, the donor's family selflessly consented to donate her organs, offering hope to those in need. However, due to the donor's advanced age, a single kidney transplant would not have been sufficient for the recipient on dialysis.
Innovative Solution
Faced with this challenge, the transplant team made a bold decision to utilize both kidneys from the elderly donor in a single recipient. This innovative approach aimed to bridge the substantial gap between the demand and supply of organs in India, particularly for patients in dire need of kidney transplants.
Successful Surgery and Recovery
The recipient, a 51-year-old woman who urgently required a kidney, underwent the intricate surgery on December 22, 2022. The transplant team, led by Dr. Asuri Krishna, Additional Professor of Surgery at AIIMS, meticulously placed both kidneys on the right side of the recipient, one positioned atop the other.
Despite the complexity of the procedure, the recipient experienced an uneventful recovery. Both transplanted kidneys functioned optimally, providing renewed hope and improved quality of life for the patient.
Significance and Impact
This extraordinary surgery stands as a testament to the exceptional skills and expertise of the AIIMS transplant team. By successfully utilizing organs from an elderly donor, which would typically be deemed unsuitable for transplantation, the team has demonstrated the potential to expand the donor pool and address the critical shortage of organs in India.
The patient has been closely monitored since the surgery and has shown remarkable progress. She was discharged within three weeks of the operation, a testament to the success of the dual kidney transplant.
The groundbreaking dual kidney transplant performed at AIIMS-Delhi represents a significant advancement in organ transplantation in India. This remarkable achievement underscores the dedication and expertise of the medical team involved and offers hope to countless patients awaiting life-saving organ transplants.
