Drone Attack on Chemical Tanker MV Chem Pluto: Indian Navy Conducts Inspection

The Indian Navy conducted an inspection of the Liberian-flagged vessel MV Chem Pluto after it was struck by a drone off Indias west coast. The origin of the strike and the amount of explosive used are yet to be determined.

On December 25, the Indian Navy released an analysis report following an initial inspection of the chemical tanker MV Chem Pluto, which was struck by a drone off India's west coast. The analysis aims to determine the origin of the strike and the amount of explosive used.

Drone Strike on Chemical Tanker Raises Concerns in Arabian Sea

Detailed Inspection by Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team

Upon arrival at Mumbai harbor, the Navy's explosive ordnance disposal team conducted a thorough examination of the Liberian-flagged vessel. The ship was previously hit by a drone in the Arabian Sea while en route to New Mangalore port.

Pentagon's Statement on the Attack

A Pentagon spokesperson disclosed that MV Chem Pluto was targeted by a one-way attack drone launched from Iran. This revelation adds to the growing concerns over attacks on commercial vessels in the region.

Navy's Deployment for Surveillance and Deterrence

In response to the spate of attacks, the Indian Navy has deployed P-8I long-range patrol aircraft for surveillance and deployed warships INS Mormugao, INS Kochi, and INS Kolkata in the region to maintain a deterrent presence.

Recent Drone Attacks and Regional Tensions

The drone attack on MV Chem Pluto occurred amidst heightened concerns regarding commercial vessels being targeted by Iran-backed Houthi militants in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. These attacks are linked to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

Arrival at Mumbai and Preliminary Assessment

MV Chem Pluto, carrying 21 Indian and one Vietnamese crew member, anchored at the outer anchorage off Mumbai. Escorted by the Indian Coast Guard ship ICGS Vikram, the vessel underwent an initial assessment by the Navy's explosive ordnance disposal team upon arrival.

Further Analysis and Joint Investigation

While the analysis indicates a drone attack based on the area of attack and debris found on the ship, further forensic and technical analysis is required to determine the precise vector of attack, including the type and quantity of explosives used. A joint investigation involving various agencies has commenced following the completion of the initial analysis.

Vessel Cleared for Further Operation and Repairs

MV Chem Pluto has received clearance for further operation by its company-in-charge in Mumbai. The ship will undergo mandatory checks by inspecting authorities before engaging in ship-to-ship cargo transfer. Subsequently, docking and repairs will be carried out to address the damaged portion of the vessel.

Deployment of Guided Missile Destroyers

In light of the recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Arabian Sea, the Indian Navy has deployed three guided missile destroyers in the region to enhance security.

Additional Attacks and Navy's Response

Another incident occurred on the same day when a Gabon-flagged commercial crude oil tanker with 25 Indian crew members was targeted by a drone in the Southern Red Sea. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident. The Indian Navy has deployed guided missile destroyers and P8I aircraft to maintain a strong presence and monitor the situation closely in collaboration with the Coast Guard and other relevant agencies.
