DRI Arrests Two Individuals for Illegal Trade of Endangered Corals and Conches in Andhra Pradesh

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has detained two individuals in Nandyal district for the illegal trade of dead black and soft corals. The arrests were made by the Hyderabad Zonal Unit of DRI on 30 December 2024. They confiscated 10 kg of dead black corals, 200 grams of dead soft corals, and six trapezium horse conches during the operation.

DRI Arrests Two for Coral Trade in Andhra

Black and soft corals are protected under Schedule-I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, granting them the highest level of protection. The trapezium horse conch is listed under Schedule-II of the same act. This information was shared by the DRI in a press release issued on Thursday.

Illegal Coral Trade Uncovered

The DRI, operating under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs, identified the supplier of these marine contraband items as being based in Ongole, a city in southern India. Acting on precise intelligence, the Vijayawada Regional Unit of DRI apprehended this supplier and seized an additional 6.6 kg of dead black corals on 31 December.

Corals are crucial to marine ecosystems as they form coral reef systems that provide habitat and food for various marine species. Removing them can devastate these habitats, affecting numerous other organisms that rely on them for survival.

Mythical Beliefs Drive Demand

The DRI clarified that dead black and soft corals hold no medicinal value or problem-solving capabilities. Locally known as Indrajaal and Mahendrajaal, they are often sought after due to beliefs in their mythical powers rather than any scientific benefits.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges in protecting endangered marine life from illegal trade. The DRI's efforts aim to curb such activities and preserve vital marine ecosystems.
