Union Minister Khattar Confirms Upcoming Notification of Delhi-2041 Master Plan

The draft Master Plan for Delhi-2041 (MPD) is under review and will be announced soon, according to Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. During a press conference marking 100 days of the Modi government's third term, Khattar acknowledged challenges in finalising the MPD. Public suggestions are being considered in the process.

Delhi-2041 Master Plan Notification Soon

Approval for the MPD has been delayed for over 18 months. In February last year, Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena endorsed the draft, highlighting its focus on inclusive development, sustainability, and innovative strategies. These include transit-oriented development hubs, land pooling, heritage conservation, Yamuna rejuvenation, and city regeneration.

Strategic Framework for Delhi's Growth

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) prepared the MPD as a statutory document to guide the city's growth. It evaluates current conditions and outlines steps to achieve desired development outcomes. The first MPD was introduced in 1962 under the Delhi Development Act of 1957. These plans cover a 20-year period and offer a comprehensive framework for planned urban development.

The draft MPD-2041 aims to provide a strategic and enabling framework for Delhi's future growth. It builds on lessons from previous plans and incorporates insights from various projects across India. This approach ensures that the plan is both practical and forward-thinking.

Despite Lt Governor Saxena's approval, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has yet to give its final nod to the MPD-2041. The delay underscores the complexity of balancing diverse interests and ensuring comprehensive urban planning.

The MPD-2041 is designed to address key urban challenges while promoting sustainable growth. Its focus on innovative interventions reflects a commitment to modernising Delhi's infrastructure and enhancing quality of life for its residents.

As the draft plan awaits final approval, stakeholders remain hopeful that it will pave the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future for Delhi. The emphasis on public input highlights the importance of community engagement in shaping urban policies.
