Doklam standoff: Impossible for China to break India's maritime containment

Beijing has been trying to lure India to join the BRI projects and says that both countries stand to benefit.

Amidst the Doklam standoff Chinese experts have warned that playing with India would amount to losing a lifeline. If China gets aggressive on the issue, then there is a potential threat at the Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Antony Wong Dong, a Macau-based military expert said that China is pushing India further away and could well end up making it an enemy. Such hardball politics are not in the interest of China, the expert warned.

Even if China manages to win the war on land, it would be impossible for the PLA Navy to break India's maritime containment, the expert warned. The importance of the Indian Ocean as a commercial lifeline was also explained by the expert in an interview with the Hong Kong based English daily South China Morning Post.

India has never succumbed to China's carrot and stick strategies, Wong said. He explained that INdia is strategically located at the heart of China's energy lifeline and the Belt and Road initiative. Hence offending India will only push it into the rival camp.

Beijing has been trying to lure India to join the BRI projects and says that both countries stand to benefit. If China continues its hard policy then the chances of India joining the BRI is remote. It may be recalled that India had boycotted the BRI summit in May. India stated that the China Pakistan Economic Corridor under the BRI violates its sovereignty.
