Shame to Hippocratic oath: Docs attending function, lady dies in hosp

Punjab
Chandigarh, Feb 7: In a violation of the Hippocratic oath taken by a doctor, a 65-year old woman lost her life to cardiac arrest in the hospital in Hoshiarpur in Punjab.

The son of the patient alleged that the doctors were all busy attending a function, organised by the Union minister of state for health Santosh Chaudhary, just 11 meters away, but could not come to the rescue of his mother.

When the woman, Kanti Devi, was brought to the hospital, all the doctors including the civil surgeon Surjit Singh were attending the Swasthya Jan Soochna Abhiyan, said her son Loveraj Singh. When no doctor came back to treat his mother for 40 minutes, he (who worked as a security guard at a tractor company) along with other family members went to the function hall, disrupted it and shouted at the doctors.

"We wandered from the emergency wing of the hospital to the function twice. But doctors kept telling us they would return only after the function got over," a 42-year-old Loveraj said.

The health minister, however, refused to take the blame saying that the death was natural. The civil surgeon, however, confessed that there was a delay in sending the doctor due to the tight security check. "Our heart specialist did reach the ward but there was a delay," he said, ensuring that an inquiry committee would be set, which would cooperate with the police.
