Do You Have These Symptoms? You Could Be Struggling With Festive Season Stress
As the festive season kicks off, your social media feed is likely to be inundated with a barrage of offers and advertisements. While this may heighten your excitement, it also tends to trigger festive stress for many adults. Questions like which events to attend, what gifts to purchase, what holiday plans to make, and so on, can create a sense of overwhelm.
Amidst all this chaos, you may notice an increasing number of social media posts and reminders about taking care of your overall physical and mental well-being, especially since October 8th is World Health Day and October 10th is World Mental Health Day. But how can you effectively do that?

In the post-pandemic world, most of us have gained an increased awareness of the importance of physical health and how our life choices impact our mental well-being. Yet, how can we be certain that we're making informed choices and doing enough to promote our well-being? As a psychologist, I often find myself engaged in conversations with clients who acknowledge the need to make positive changes in their lives but are uncertain about where to begin or whether their efforts are yielding any benefits.
Nothing operates in isolation
While traditional science often treated the mind and body separately, recent advances in research and technology have shed light on the intricate connections between the central nervous system, immune system, and endocrine system, emphasizing the importance of a mind-body balance medical model. Consider, for example, the impact of stress on heart disease-studies by researchers like Dean Ornish and others have demonstrated that dietary changes, exercise, meditation, and social support can prevent and even reverse heart diseases.
Tools for daily life
So, what if we applied this approach of achieving greater balance and well-being to our daily lives? Returning to my conversations with clients, I often encourage them to adopt the MIND BODY SOUL CONNECT well-being paradigm. Setting goals in each of these three areas can lead to more holistic benefits than working on any single aspect in isolation. Hence application of this paradigm can help cope with the festive season stress too.
MIND objectives encompass various strategies aimed at enhancing mental well-being.
Luckily, there are several natural methods to foster mindfulness and reduce stress amidst the holiday chaos. Consider making it a daily goal to meditate during your pre-holiday routine. Incorporating this practice into your mornings and evenings can be quite effortless and doesn't require extensive time commitment. Even a brief breathing exercise or a moment of mantra chanting can be beneficial. Another effective way to minimize mental turmoil is through proactive planning. Compile a list of individuals you intend to gift, along with potential gift ideas. If you're hosting an event, pre-plan your menu and organize your kitchen. A to-do list can provide a visual roadmap for tasks and responsibilities, reducing stress.
BODY goals revolve around the pursuit of physical well-being.
These objectives involve integrating mild to moderate exercise into your routine, maintaining a balanced diet, and establishing a healthy sleep pattern. If late nights are disrupting your sleep, consider incorporating midday naps into your schedule. A 45-minute nap can enhance memory by clearing temporary information storage in your brain. Additionally, during the holiday season, it's acceptable to savour seasonal flavours while maintaining dietary awareness. On days when you're at home, opt for a simple detox with homemade meals and ample hydration. While these goals may appear straightforward, implementing them can be challenging, so initiating small steps and gradually building upon them is key.
SOUL goals entail reconnecting with a higher purpose and vision that drives personal growth.
A valuable starting point is spending time in nature, as recent research suggests that dedicating at least 120 minutes a week to nature can significantly enhance health and well-being. Create a daily ritual where you take a 15-minute breather to sit quietly and contemplate. Time spent in natural surroundings offers respite from the overstimulating and energy-draining effects of noise, light, odours, and social demands. Remind yourself of your priorities concerning people, places, events, and activities.
It's perfectly acceptable to decline invitations if they don't align with your values and well-being. Consider the difference between a momentary discomfort when saying "no" and the potential resentment that may arise from obliging to something you genuinely don't want to do. If materialistic gifts don't resonate with you, opt for meaningful gestures for your loved ones. This could involve planning a date night, organizing a picnic with your children, baking special treats for friends, or crafting handmade gifts. These actions not only ignite your passion but also convey your care and thoughtfulness.
The ultimate challenge lies in finding the right combination of these objectives that suits your unique needs. As you embark on the journey to discover the ideal recipe for balancing your mind, body, and soul, remember to celebrate your achievements, both small and big, and acknowledge the obstacles you encounter. By cultivating self-compassion, gratitude, and an understanding that life doesn't follow a linear path, you can maintain the motivation to persevere in your pursuit of happiness.
