New Delhi, Nov 8: Diwali celebrations can be great fun for you, but it does not bring any joy for the pets or animals living on the roads as thousands of them are left with firecrackers' burns every year, an animal rights group said on Sunday.

Issuing an advisory ahead of Diwali that falls on November 11, the Humane Society International has suggested keeping pets indoors and in a familiar room.

Happy Diwali

It says pets have a heightened sense of hearing so the jolts and loud noises cause many animals to flee in search of safe haven.

"Firework displays and celebrations bring anxiety and fear into animals on streets, farms or as pets in our house," an official statement quoting its India managing director N.G. Jayasimha said.

Fireworks display turns out to be a nightmare for the animals.

"We should be responsible enough and ensure that we keep the environment safe and comfortable for animals while we celebrate this beautiful festival of lights," he said.

According to the rights group, decorate with lights, lamps and 'diyas' which are friendlier to the environment and animals by giving off less smoke and noise.

Refrain from bursting crackers near an animal shelter or zoo. Noise can cause panic and pets can be left trembling, shaking, barking more and injured by fireworks. Light, noise and colour can be frightening and chaotic for animals.

Moreover, it adds, animal shelters report a dramatic increase in pets lost during the commotion of the celebrations.
