Disturbing Timeline Of Chopper Crashes In Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand, home to some of India's holiest pilgrimage sites, has witnessed a concerning spate of helicopter accidents over the years.

With its challenging topography, unpredictable weather, and seasonal rush during the Char Dham Yatra, the hill state has become a hotbed for chopper-related tragedies.

Today's incident near Gaurikund on 15 June 2025 adds to a growing list of fatal and near-fatal crashes that have raised serious questions about aerial safety in the region.

Gaurikund, June 2025

A helicopter belonging to Aryan Aviation, ferrying passengers from Guptkashi to Kedarnath, crashed in the dense jungles near Gaurikund.

The aircraft was carrying six people, including the pilot. Preliminary reports suggest there are casualties, though official confirmation is awaited.

The helicopter reportedly lost its course due to poor weather in the Kedarnath valley. Rescue operations are underway with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies at the scene.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences on X, stating: "Extremely sad news has been received about the helicopter crash in Rudraprayag district. SDRF, local administration, and other rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations."

This incident marks yet another aviation mishap along the pilgrimage route, where helicopters are routinely used to ferry thousands of devotees to and from the remote shrine of Kedarnath.

An Indian Air Force Mi-17 V5 helicopter crashed north of Gaurikund, killing 20 defence personnel and rescue workers.

Repeating Patterns, Recurring Concerns

The high frequency of crashes-especially during the pilgrimage months of May to June-points to systemic vulnerabilities. Experts have repeatedly cited three major risk factors:

Unpredictable Weather: The Kedarnath valley and surrounding regions are prone to sudden weather changes, reducing visibility and complicating navigation.

Topographical Challenges: Narrow valleys, high-altitude helipads, and turbulent wind conditions make flying risky.

High Traffic Volume: The seasonal rush during the Char Dham Yatra overwhelms aviation infrastructure, sometimes leading to lapses in maintenance and oversight.

DGCA's Scrutiny and Next Steps

Following the cluster of incidents in May and June 2025, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a review into helicopter operations in Uttarakhand.

Operators have been asked to submit updated safety protocols, weather readiness reports, and maintenance logs.

The DGCA is also considering imposing flight restrictions during inclement weather windows.
