Disabled girl fights all odds to help her family

Jharkhand
Dhanbad, July 3: She may have been considered a burden for her family when she was born, but tables have turn around now. Basanti has set an example for others to learn. With no hands at all, her strength of mind and perseverance found her working as a para teacher in a school.

Her parents did not want her to go to school, thinking she would not be able to write. However, on repeated request, she was finally sent.

Just within a month, she learnt to use her feet. She started taking tuitions and started correcting notebooks and writing with her feet.

"Back in school, I learnt how to write with my feet. In 2005 when I joined as para teacher, to write on the blackboard became a challenge for me," she said, adding that with practice and balancing her body, she was able to learn it.

She is now preparing to marry off her eldest sister, while the rest of her siblings are settled. She plans to take care of retired father and mother.
