Dimapur rapist paraded naked, killed and hanged by mob

Dimapur, March 6: Just after the banning of the controversial video by the BBC on the Nirbhaya rape case, Nagaland students showed what they thought best serves a rapist. Close to 4,000 students barged into the Dimapur jail and dragged out a 35-year old illegal Bangladeshi migrant, Syed Farid Khan, who had raped a college student several times on February 23. He was arrested the following day after a complaint was lodged by the victim.

The police resorted to blank firing and fired tear gas shells, but the mob could not be controlled. The unruly mob set at least 10 vehicles ablaze, forcing the authorities to clamp a curfew in Dimapur district.

District police chief Meren Jamir said,"A mob of around 4,000 people stormed the central jail after breaking the two gates and took the accused out of jail and paraded him naked to the city tower in the heart of Dimapur town, before we could rescue him from the mob."

He further added that Khan's body was retrieved from the mob after police fired in the air to disperse them. District magistrate Wezope Kenye said,"We have clamped curfew in Dimapur district to contain the law and order situation following the unfortunate incident."

Authorities, however, say that they are trying to bring normalcy in the district. Many people were injured when police fired to disperse the mob.

The problem was rooted in Tuesday when people marched to the Clock Tower to demand exemplary punishment for Farid. However, curfew had to be imposed after a group of people took out a protest rally against the rape on Wednesday. THis has sparked fear among the traders' community here as the people now demand the cancellation of trade licenses of all non-local businessmen in the town.
