Gandhinagar, Nov 3: It's during the hectic election campaign trails that our leaders get to see the 'real India'. Not only do they address crowd at mammoth rallies, but also engage in some small happiness like enjoying a cup of tea and samosa with their supporters.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who was in Vapi, Gujarat on Thursday-- as a part of the Assembly election campaign in the poll-bound state--had his dinner with locals at a hotel.

The Gujarat Assembly elections are scheduled on December 9 and December 18. The Congress under Rahul's leadership is trying hard to make its comeback in the state which is under the rule of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for more than two decades now.

What attracted everyone's attention is that Rahul decided to enjoy a meal of khichdi. There is no harm in having the wholesome food, but the fact that Rahul and his entourage selected khichdi for dinner in a way showcases the Congress' endorsement for the dish which hogged the limelight only on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Twitter was debating whether the vegetarian meal should be made the national dish after the BJP hinted about the same.

So, did Rahul by gorging on khichdi endorse his support for it as the national dish? Or, was it a mere coincidence that Rahul wanted to taste the dish just after the nation witnessed a khichdi furore?

As the brouhaha over khichdi made headlines, Union minister of food processing industries, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, took to Twitter to dispel rumours surrounding the dish.

The "fictitious" national dish was cooked on Twitter after report came in that over 800 kg khichdi will be prepared live on November 4 at the World Food India event in the national capital in a bid to create world record and popularise it as the brand India food globally.

According to officials, khichdi has been selected as the brand India food because it "symbolises the country's unity in diversity".

While Rahul was enjoying his share of khichdi, his supporters took selfies with him.

So, can we call the selfies as khichdi selfies? Or, are we going to witness more politics over the humble dish in the coming days?
